The Research Assistant II will be an integral part of a team providing husbandry care and daily lab operations in the animal studies programs.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Assist in the animal facilities. This includes but is not limited to:
- Animal Husbandry
- General checks and weight checks
- Breeding
- Weaning
- Genotyping
- Assisting with animal procedures
- Behavior Studies
- Handling
- Collecting animal tissue
- Assisting and performing minor surgeries
- Note taking for regulatory purposes
- Processing animal tissue
- Running assays
- Homogenizing tissue samples, extracting DNA
- Preparing and staining slides
- Inventory management of tissues
- Animal Husbandry
- Occasional weekend checks of animals (with prior scheduling) which will take less than 1 hour
- Maintaining the lab space and preparing for inspections
- Helping with lab organization and new equipment installation
- General lab maintenance consisting of autoclaving biohazard, cleaning equipment and benches, cleaning tools, autoclaving clean tools
- Preparing buffers, chemicals, reagents
- Assist with inventory management of tissues as well as general lab supplies
Requirements
- Bachelors in biology, chemistry, microbiology, molecular and cellular biology, or other related science degree
- Exercise discretion and confidentiality with sensitive company information
- Prior experience in animal handling and willingness to work with small rodents.
- Familiar with Microsoft Windows applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) with preferred knowledge of how to write and manipulate complex formulas in Excel
- Expected to work independently as well as in a team setting, identify challenges and seek input from colleagues and supervisor for solutions to diverse problems.
- Ability to follow instructions and understand workplace materials.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required along with the ability to communicate with coworkers and management effectively and professionally.
